Eat, Pray, Love, Die of Multi-Drug-Resistant Bacterial Infection
The Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal has published a study on NDM-1, a bacteria resistant to many broad-spectrum antibiotics, including carbapenems. The bacteria are found most often in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Researcher Timothy Walsh:
“Because of medical tourism and international travel in general, resistance to these types of bacteria has the potential to spread around the world very, very quickly. And there is nothing in the [drug development] pipeline to tackle it.”
